Seminar overview:
As part of the ongoing 'FuturePlan' estates redevelopment at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in South Kensington, the Trustees of the V&A commissioned a new world class gallery in the Boiler House Courtyard adjacent to Exhibition Road. The gallery is constructed entirely below ground to create a new public courtyard and feature entrance above, with virtually no superstructure to hold the basement down. Stuart will discuss some of the novel design solution used, the ground breaking research that has been incorporated into the fabric of the basement and challenges encountered during construction.
Short biography:
Stuart is an Associate Director in the London geotechnics group of Ove Arup & Partners Ltd. After completing an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering and a PhD in geotechnical engineering at Imperial College, Stuart has worked on a number of challenging basement and foundation projects located mainly in the Middle East and London. These have included the new Wembley Stadium, the Exhibition Road Building for the Victoria and Albert Museum and the redevelopment of the Shell Centre building in Waterloo. Stuart is UK representative of on the EC7 evolution group for the design of embedded
retaining walls and currently leads the geotechnical design of the S1 and S2 D&B packages on HS2.
