"The mechanics of sands at the particle and continuum scales" by Prof Matthew Coop (University College London)

Seminar overview:
Recent decades have seen many advances in the behaviour of sands, notably in the effects of the nature of the particles and their breakage as well as the natural
structure of the assembly. The seminar will highlight the complexity that these introduce and the possibility of using particulate approaches, along with the challenges to laboratory testing that those bring.

Biography:
Matthew graduated from Imperial College and after a brief career in the offshore oil industry carried out his DPhil at Oxford with Professor Peter Wroth. Over a research career of more than thirty years, he has worked at City University London, Imperial College, City University Hong Kong and University College London. He has written over one hundred journal papers, many of which are well cited, with a WoS H-Index of 41. He was the founding editor of Géotechnique Letters, is the next editor of Géotechnique and is Chair of TC101 (lab testing) of the ISSMGE. His work has been awarded numerous prizes, including the ICE Geotechnical Research Medal (three times), the BGA Prize (three times) and the George Stephenson Medal.
