Seminar Overview:

The seminar will explore the use of horizontal drains to mitigate the effects of liquefaction on building. Starting from the evidences of a field test, the results of centrifuge tests and numerical modelling will be presented. Finally, a design procedure will be discussed.

Biography:

Emilio Bilotta is member of the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering of the University of Napoli Federico II, where he teaches soil mechanics and tunnels and underground structures. His main research interests concern tunnelling in urban areas; tunnels under seismic actions and ground improvement for seismic mitigation.

He is the Italian delegate of the technical committees TC 104 (Physical Modelling) and TC 219 (System Performance of Geotechnical Structures) of the ISSMGE; member of the Italian Geotechnical Association (AGI) and of the Italian Tunnelling Society (SIG); member of the editorial board of the Rivista Italiana di Geotecnica. He is also co-founder of the academic spin-off and start-up Smart-G - innovative solutions in ground improvement and geotechnical engineering.
