Cambridge University Geotechnical Society

Seminar overview:

The presentation will explain the need to rethink the construction of deep foundations; especially in urban areas.  A new type of bored pile foundation will be introduced together with results of a field trial that has resulted in a series of physical model tests to explore soil/structure interaction.

Andrew McNamara is a member of the multi scale geotechnical engineering research group at City. University of London and director of the Temporary Works forum Centre of Excellence in Temporary Works and Construction Method Engineering.  He is a former chair of ISSMGE TC104 on Physical Modelling in Geotechnics and specialises in centrifuge modelling of deep foundations and deep excavations.  He is also chief engineer for Skanska Building in the UK; a £300m turnover contracting organisation responsible for landmark buildings such as ‘The Gherkin, ‘The Scalpel’ and Heron Tower.
