Cambridge University Geotechnical Society

Workshop overview:

As a specialist geotechnical practitioner, the challenges are invariably diverse and complex. The tools to hand have been developed on the basis of theories tempered with experience and vice versa. They are recorded in textbooks and technical literature by the informed. (i.e. Learned minds from Cambridge and elsewhere, and expert practitioners). It is for the rank and file of the profession to harness this information for use in the designs they are executing –and to best effect.
The presentation will start with a practical demonstration involving audience participation, to solve a real geotechnical puzzle. It will continue by providing attendees with the opportunity for developing their own solutions to the challenges faced by the presenter on a number of very different projects, and be appraised of the solutions that were finally implemented.

Biography:

John became a Chartered Structure Engineer in the Early 1970’s, obtaining a Master’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering in the early 1980’s. Both disciplines became intertwined and interdependent from the outset, and have remained so. He has been responsible - inter alia - for developing engineering design solutions for High Profile projects in the UK and abroad, in which soil-structure interaction has had a prominent influence.
