Summary of Lent term 2018 events

The first seminar of term was given by Professor Cino Viggiani (Universite Grenoble Alpes) in Darwin College. Cino discussed how x-ray micro tomography imaging can be used to look at what actually happens when a granular material deforms and eventually fails, both at a particle and continuum scale.

The second seminar of term was given by Dr Stuart Hardy (Arup) in Queens’ College, on the New Exhibition Hall at the V&A Museum. Stuart presented a number of the novel design solutions used, and also some of the challenges encountered during construction.

The final seminar of term was given by Professor George Gazetas (National Technical University, Athens) in St Catharine’s College, on soil amplification of seismic motion. George’s presentation used the case histories of the Mexico City 1985 and 2017 earthquakes to illustrate the dramatic consequences of soil amplification. The following day we were pleased to learn that Professor George Gazetas will be giving next year’s Rankine lecture.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this term such a success!
